The 7^th International Conference of Ombuds Institutions for the Armed Forces (ICOAF) explored in greater detail the relationship between ombuds institutions and democratic societies. The armed forces play a complex role in democracy, tasked with ensuring public security and stability to support democratic institutions. However, their unique powers, particularly the legitimate use of force, pose risks of misuse that can undermine these institutions. Balancing public security with democratic accountability is crucial, and establishing oversight bodies, such as ombuds institutions, is one effective approach.
