The Role of Ombuds Institutions in Safeguarding the Human Rights of Service Members in Peacetime and Operations

25 – 28 April 2010
Vienna, Austria
Number of Participants: 31

The conference, co-organized by the Austrian Armed Forces Commission and DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance focused on the role of ombuds institutions in promoting and protecting the human rights of servicemen and servicewomen during peacetime and military operations, as well as the care they received after such operations ended.

Against this backdrop, the “Vienna Memorandum” served as the basis for successful country-overarching cooperation in the interest and for the good of the soldiers.
