INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
Operating abroad: Enhancing the ombuds institutions’ cooperation in the context of UN peacekeeping operations
[4-5 October 2021]
Representative of ombuds institutions from Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Norway and Senegal have gathered two weeks ago for a workshop in Berlin, co-hosted by DCAF and German Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, with the support from German Federal Foreign Office.

The workshop has focused on the roles national ombuds institutions from troop contributing countries and host states could play to strengthen complaints and grievances mechanisms or prevent and address all forms of misconduct related to national troop contingents, including sexual exploitation and abuse. Interlocutors from the UN Secretariat (DMSPC-CDS) and leading academics have joined the discussion and have clearly shown that there is significant potential and scope for integrating ombuds institutions into international mission settings more systematically.
The workshop has resulted in an updated text of the Resolution on intensified international partnership of ombuds institutions for the armed forces and the Action Plan for its implementation in 2022.
